At the end of Utah senator Bob Bennett‘s career, I was a little harsh on him because I felt he spoke authoritatively on economic issues despite being uninformed on them. In retrospect though, he was a moderate Republican and I would’ve rather seen him have another six years than send Tea Partier Mike Lee to Washington.
In this video clip I found, Bennett, showing his practical side, defends Nevada Democratic senator Harry Reid, a faithful Mormon, against personal attacks from his fellow Mormons. Because I’m all about destroying the notion that a good Mormon must adhere to certain political creeds, I happily pass along these words from good ol’ Bob.
Here’s the transcript:
It really upsets a lot of my Republican Mormon friends when I tell them that Harry Reid carries a current temple recommend, does his home teaching, married in the temple, sent his kids on missions, and Harry Reid has done as much to further the work of the kingdom as any politician that has ever served in national office, including me.
The Deseret News just ran a retrospective of the now-retired Reid.
