Leveling Up – A Priesthood Analogy for Deacons
Posted on Dec 30, 2018 by Trevor in Religion
This is a fun little way to frame priesthood ordination for incoming deacons, some of whom are freshly minted 11-year-olds.
Most kids these days are familiar with the concept of leveling up a character in a video game. What is it that changes to your hero when it levels up? Possibly, the character:
- learns new abilities or skills
- becomes stronger or more powerful
- unlocks the ability to wield new weapons or items
- gains the ability to visit locations previously prohibited
- becomes capable enough to handle tougher or bigger quests
As boys turn 11 and leave primary, they are coming up on a point in their life when they’ll be “leveling up”. But instead of a character in a video game, it’s them in real life, partnering with God to help serve others as well as develop themselves.

Yeah, power ups aren’t the same as leveling up,
but who doesn’t like Mario?
